Holy Saturday: The Day of God’s Silence
Holy Saturday is the most easily overlooked day of the Triduum. It has no liturgy until nightfall, no sacraments, no proclamations. The tabernacle is empty. Christ is in the tomb. The Church keeps vigil in stillness.
It is the one day in the Christian year when the Church feels what it is like to live without visible signs of God’s activity.
This is not an accident. It is pedagogy.
Holy Saturday teaches that God’s silence is not God’s absence. In Catholic tradition, Christ is not idle; He is descending to the dead, breaking open the realm of death from within. The world sees stillness; heaven sees movement.
Waiting becomes the place where God is at work in ways we cannot yet perceive.
Why Waiting Matters in Catholic Spirituality
1. Waiting trains the heart in hope
Hope is not optimism. It is the decision to trust God when the outcome is not visible.
Catholic theology insists that hope is forged precisely in the gap between promise and fulfillment.

Waiting exposes the truth: we are not in control, and that is not a failure but a doorway to grace.
4. Waiting aligns us with salvation history
Scripture is a long story of waiting:
- Israel waits for deliverance in Egypt
- The prophets wait for the Messiah
- Mary waits for the birth of Christ
- The Church waits for His return
Holy Saturday places us inside that same rhythm.
5. Waiting is where resurrection takes shape
The Church teaches that God often works in hiddenness — in the soil, in the womb, in the tomb.
Waiting is the human participation in that hidden work.
We stay present while God transforms what we cannot see.
The Easter Vigil: The Answer to the Waiting
The Easter Vigil is not just a celebration; it is the revelation of what the waiting meant.
- The fire is lit in darkness
- The Exsultet proclaims that night itself becomes holy
- The readings trace salvation’s long arc of waiting
- Baptismal waters break open new life
The Vigil declares:
God was not absent. God was preparing resurrection.
Holy Saturday’s silence is answered by Easter’s proclamation.
The Heart of It
Waiting is not a pause in the spiritual life.
It is the spiritual life — the place where faith matures, hope deepens, and love steadies itself.
Holy Saturday is the Church’s annual reminder that God does some of His most decisive work when He appears to be doing nothing at all.

Easter at the Mission: A Cat's Observation of the Paschal Mystery by Sula Parish Cat at Old Mission is told in the voice of the cat who lives at the Old Mission San Juan Bautista in California. This is the fifth book about the Mission written by Sula. She roams the chapel, the grounds, the cemetery, and the mission gift shop. Sula is fed and loved by many who come to the Mission and are frequently greeted by her. Sula calls God 'the Boss.' This book concentrates on what Catholics believe about the time from Ash Wednesday through Resurrection Sunday. The Stations of the Cross are explained. The structure of the Mass changes during the time from Palm Sunday through Resurrection Sunday.
My favorite part of Easter at the Mission by Sula Parish Cat at Old Mission is the humor. I learned some things about history, such as St. Francis trying to peacefully end the Crusades. I found it interesting that for Ash Wednesday the ashes are made by burning the past year’s Palm Sunday branches. I appreciated that people can learn how Easter and Lent are determined on the calendar, which explains why Easter is on a different day each year. The pictures of Sula roaming around the Mission help us understand that it is a real cat, not just a fictional one. I have learned things about the Catholic faith. I especially liked the part where the cat explains to readers about the Stations of the Cross. I think this book would be great for Protestants to read to better understand what Catholics believe.
