How My Cat Made Me a Better Neighbor
My cat has no concept of boundaries — emotional, geographic, or social. Naturally, this has improved my standing on the block.
He introduced me to everyone. Not by choice. He simply walked into their yards, porches, garages, and once, their SUV. I had to follow with apologies and small talk. Boom: instant community.
He forced me to be observant. If a neighbor’s window is open, he’s in it. If their door is ajar, he’s halfway through. I now notice things like “Your gate latch is loose” or “Your Amazon package has been sitting out since Tuesday.”
He taught me diplomacy. Nothing builds negotiation skills like retrieving a cat who has decided he lives with the people across the street now.
He made me generous. When your cat eats a neighbor’s plants, you show up with muffins. It’s the law.
He softened the block. People who never spoke now wave at me because they know my cat. Some even ask about him by name. I’m basically the cat’s plus-one in my own neighborhood.
My cat may not respect property lines, but he sure knows how to build community.

Book Description
Jeremy Feig was at rock bottom - broke, alone, and living in a shoebox-sized apartment. At the same time, his cat was perfectly content. What was her secret? She couldn't say it out loud, but it was clear she had all the answers to living a good life. How My Cat Made Me a Better Man is a hilarious self-help book for guys that gals like, too, based on the lessons of an edgy cat named Shelly. It's packed with useful advice on topics like relationships, dealing with stress, and even grooming habits. If you feel like your life is spinning out of control, this book will help you set things right - and keep you laughing along the way. Winner of the Kops-Fetherling International Books Awards legacy humor award and finalist for Book of the Year Award, How My Cat Made Me a Better Man is a "darling" of cat bloggers, recipient of a Readers' Favorite 5-star review, and "highly recommended" by MidWest Book Review. Delightfully illustrated with pen-and-ink drawings by famed Russian artist, Zhenya Yanovich.
