Handling Pets’ Biological Needs While Traveling

 


Traveling with pets can be joyful, but it also means managing the most basic—and sometimes messy—realities of biology. Whether you’re on a road trip, flight, or long train ride, your animal’s comfort depends on how well you anticipate their physical needs. Here’s how to make the journey humane, calm, and clean for everyone involved.

1. Hydration and Timing

Animals dehydrate faster in transit, especially in warm vehicles or under stress.

  • Offer water at regular intervals, but avoid over-hydration right before departure.

  • Freeze a small bowl of water overnight; it will melt slowly and reduce spills.

  • For cats or small dogs, use travel bottles with drip valves—they mimic licking and minimize mess.

2. Bathroom Breaks and Litter Logistics

Every species has its rhythm.

  • Dogs: Plan stops every 2–3 hours. Choose shaded, quiet areas away from traffic.

  • Cats: Portable litter boxes with disposable liners are invaluable. Keep a small bag of familiar litter—it helps them recognize the scent and feel safe.

  • Small mammals or birds: Line carriers with absorbent pads and change them often.

A Publisher's Conversation with Authors: De-confusing Royalty Structure

  Authors frequently confuse LIST and NET and, in this way, end up with contracts that pay lower royalties when they believe that they are getting a good deal. Often, they cannot negotiate in ways that benefit themselves because they do not understand this difference and its significance. Let's break this down. List refers to the retail price of the book. Payment on list means a percentage of the retail price of the book. If royalties are 8% of list (5-8% is typical), then on a $10 book, royalties would be 80 cents; if they are 10%, royalties are $1, on every book sold.
