How My Cat Made Me A Better Hunter

There’s a certain humility in watching a cat hunt. Mine doesn’t stalk for sport or ego—she hunts because she must. The rhythm is instinctive: the pause, the breath, the stillness before motion. She teaches me that hunting, in its truest form, is not about domination but about awareness.

When she crouches low in the grass, every muscle tuned to the pulse of life around her, I see what it means to be fully present. She doesn’t waste energy. She doesn’t chase what she can’t catch. She waits, listens, and moves only when the moment is right. That patience has changed me. It’s made me a better “hunter” in the human sense—more attuned to timing, opportunity, and the quiet signals that precede success.

I’ve learned that necessary hunting—whether for food, truth, or understanding—requires respect. It’s about balance, not conquest. My cat’s kills are clean, purposeful, and never wasteful. She eats what she catches. She honors the cycle.

There’s a caveat here, though: trophy hunting is not hunting—it’s arrogance dressed as adventure. It destroys what it pretends to admire. True hunters, like true seekers, know that reverence must accompany pursuit.

So when I watch her return from the field, tail high, eyes bright, I don’t see cruelty. I see competence, grace, and a reminder that every act of taking should be met with gratitude. She’s made me a better hunter—not of prey, but of meaning.

Would you like me to shape this into your usual “weekly reflection” format, with a painterly wordless graphic in your indigo‑and‑gold palette to accompany it?

Post inspired by the book How My Cat Made Me a Better Man (Jeremy Feig)

Book Description

Jeremy Feig was at rock bottom - broke, alone, and living in a shoebox-sized apartment. At the same time, his cat was perfectly content. What was her secret? She couldn't say it out loud, but it was clear she had all the answers to living a good life. How My Cat Made Me a Better Man is a hilarious self-help book for guys that gals like, too, based on the lessons of an edgy cat named Shelly. It's packed with useful advice on topics like relationships, dealing with stress, and even grooming habits. If you feel like your life is spinning out of control, this book will help you set things right - and keep you laughing along the way. Winner of the Kops-Fetherling International Books Awards legacy humor award and finalist for Book of the Year Award, How My Cat Made Me a Better Man is a "darling" of cat bloggers, recipient of a Readers' Favorite 5-star review, and "highly recommended" by MidWest Book Review.
