When loss first strikes, words collapse under the weight of what cannot be explained. The heart retreats into quiet, not because it has stopped believing, but because belief itself feels broken. Silence becomes the only honest language left.
It teaches us that the conversation never truly ends — it only deepens.

Grief often silences prayer.

But faith does not end in silence. Over time, it begins to reshape it.

At first, the question is Why did this happen? — a cry toward heaven that expects no answer. Yet as faith matures, the question changes. It becomes How can I live with this? That shift marks the beginning of dialogue. The believer moves from demanding explanation to seeking companionship — from interrogation to conversation.

Faith, then, is not certainty. It is relationship. It is the willingness to stay in conversation with God even when understanding fails. It is the courage to speak through tears, to listen through confusion, and to trust that the silence itself may be sacred.

In that dialogue, despair becomes less an abyss and more a threshold. Pain and promise begin to speak to each other. The heart learns that lament is not the opposite of faith but its deepest form — the prayer that refuses to give up on God even when God feels far away.

Beautifully written balm for the bereaved

Lamentations of the Heart, Mingled with Peace and Joy, is aptly named and provides an enormous fount of solace and inspiration from cover to cover. Ms. Wells-Smith writes a faith-driven, emotionally and intellectually intelligent book of poetry and prose, each piece interwoven with a scriptural citation, that delves into her own experience with becoming a member of a club none of us would ever want to apply for, those of us who have lost a beloved child and are left with putting our lives back together as best we can, one foot after another, as well as prose about events and people that have led her to the place in life that she can find peace and joy. It is deeply personal and because of that spoke to my own heart in ways that are hard to describe. I will return to this book at times because it has given me much to think about, which is the best kind of literature.
