How can inclusion respect diversity?

 


Inclusion respects diversity when it stops trying to standardize people. Too often, “inclusive” spaces quietly assume that everyone will adapt to a dominant norm—one way of speaking, one way of organizing, one way of showing up. But real inclusion asks the environment to do the adapting. It asks the community to widen itself, not to narrow the people inside it.

Respect begins with listening before designing. When the people most affected by a policy, a classroom structure, a workplace rule, or a community expectation are invited to shape it, the result is naturally more humane. Minority voices aren’t decorative; they’re directional. They reveal blind spots, challenge assumptions, and point out where the “default setting” only works for some.

Fairness also doesn’t always mean identical treatment. Sometimes respecting diversity means offering different supports, different pathways, or different expectations so that everyone can participate fully. Uniformity may feel tidy, but it’s rarely equitable. Inclusion becomes real when we stop treating difference as an inconvenience to be managed and start treating it as an asset that strengthens the whole.

At its best, inclusion is not a melting pot—it’s a landscape. Distinct terrains, distinct textures, distinct histories, all held within one shared horizon. The goal isn’t to make everyone the same; it’s to make sure everyone belongs without having to erase themselves.

  Authors frequently confuse LIST and NET and, in this way, end up with contracts that pay lower royalties when they believe that they are getting a good deal. Often, they cannot negotiate in ways that benefit themselves because they do not understand this difference and its significance. Let's break this down. List refers to the retail price of the book. Payment on list means a percentage of the retail price of the book. If royalties are 8% of list (5-8% is typical), then on a $10 book, royalties would be 80 cents; if they are 10%, royalties are $1, on every book sold.
