My relationship with Czechia was episodic for many years and covered my time in the military, my time in graduate school, and my time working at the Defense Language Institute. I never made it to Czechia until the early 1990s, but when I did, I was ready. I had the language, a sense of the culture, and a pretty good knowledge of the history.

The story of Czechia begins with the Bohemian Crown lands — Bohemia, Moravia, and parts of Silesia — which entered the Habsburg monarchy in 1526 after the death of King Louis II. Under Habsburg rule, the Czech lands became a central part of a vast dynastic empire, shaped by religious conflict, noble resistance, and the long shadow of the Battle of White Mountain (1620), which ushered in centuries of tighter imperial control and re‑Catholicization.

By the 18th and 19th centuries, the region was one of the most industrialized parts of the monarchy, and a vibrant Czech National Revival emerged — scholars, writers, and political thinkers reclaiming language, culture, and identity under imperial rule.

After World War I and the collapse of Austria‑Hungary, the Czech lands became the core of Czechoslovakia, a new state that included Bohemia, Moravia, Silesia, Slovakia, and Carpathian Ruthenia. Its borders were drawn for economic viability rather than ethnic lines, making it one of the most diverse successor states of the empire.

The 20th century brought occupation, communism, and eventually the peaceful Velvet Revolution (1989). In 1993, Czechoslovakia split amicably into two independent nations: Czechia and Slovakia. In 2016, the Czech government formally adopted Czechia as the country’s short, geographic name — though “Czech Republic” remains the formal political name.

Although the only place I have ever visited (twice) is Praha (Prague), Czechia as a whole Is historically and socially fascinating to  me. First, it has always sat at the hinge of Europe — shaped by Slavic roots, German influence, Habsburg administration, and later Soviet domination. Its culture reflects all of these layers without losing its own identity Second, few countries have endured so many political transformations while preserving their historical continuity. Prague’s skyline alone tells the story: Gothic, Baroque, and Art Nouveau standing side by side, untouched by the destruction that scarred much of Europe. Third, Czechia blends deep historical memory with modern innovation. It’s a country where medieval bridges, Renaissance squares, and Habsburg palaces coexist with world‑class universities, industry, and technology. Fourth, the Velvet Revolution and the Velvet Divorce remain rare examples of political transformation achieved through civic unity, dialogue, and restraint.

Czechia’s beauty lies not only in its architecture or landscapes, but in its continuity — a nation that has repeatedly rebuilt itself without erasing its past, carrying history forward with dignity, humor, and a quiet resilience.

A Publisher's Conversation with Authors: De-confusing Royalty Structure

  Authors frequently confuse LIST and NET and, in this way, end up with contracts that pay lower royalties when they believe that they are getting a good deal. Often, they cannot negotiate in ways that benefit themselves because they do not understand this difference and its significance. Let's break this down. List refers to the retail price of the book. Payment on list means a percentage of the retail price of the book. If royalties are 8% of list (5-8% is typical), then on a $10 book, royalties would be 80 cents; if they are 10%, royalties are $1, on every book sold.
