When Church Is No Longer the Container

 


Some people reach a point where church no longer feels like home. The rituals, the language, the structure — they may have served beautifully once, but now they feel too small for the life that’s unfolding. When that happens, spiritual growth doesn’t stop. It simply changes shape.

Without a formal container, spirituality begins to weave itself into daily life. It stops being something we attend and becomes something we inhabit. The sacred moves from Sunday morning into the ordinary rhythm of the week.

Compassion becomes a spiritual practice. Every act of kindness — toward a neighbor, a pet, a stranger, or oneself — becomes prayer in motion. Compassion is no longer a virtue to aspire to; it’s the way love breathes through the day.

Boundaries become a spiritual practice. Learning to say no, to rest, to protect one’s peace — these are not acts of selfishness but of reverence. They honor the divine image within, the part of us that deserves gentleness and space.

Creativity becomes a spiritual practice. Writing, painting, gardening, cooking — each becomes a way to participate in creation itself. The impulse to make beauty is the same impulse that made the world.

Rest becomes a spiritual practice. When church is no longer the container, Sabbath becomes a posture rather than a calendar entry. Rest is how we remember that we are not the ones holding the universe together.

In this integrated life, faith stops being an activity and becomes a way of being. It’s not something we do; it’s something we are. The sacred is no longer confined to a building or a schedule. It’s found in the quiet pulse of compassion, the courage of boundaries, the joy of creativity, and the peace of rest.

Spiritual growth continues — not through attendance, but through attention. Not through ritual, but through relationship. Not through separation, but through integration.

And in that integration, the divine becomes unmistakably present — everywhere, all the time.

  Authors frequently confuse LIST and NET and, in this way, end up with contracts that pay lower royalties when they believe that they are getting a good deal. Often, they cannot negotiate in ways that benefit themselves because they do not understand this difference and its significance. Let's break this down. List refers to the retail price of the book. Payment on list means a percentage of the retail price of the book. If royalties are 8% of list (5-8% is typical), then on a $10 book, royalties would be 80 cents; if they are 10%, royalties are $1, on every book sold.
