California or Bust
post inspired by Sharon Cole's book, Hazel and Olaf
Almost a century ago, families packed their lives into battered trucks and wagons and set out for California — the land of promise, sunshine, and work. They came from Oklahoma, Arkansas, Texas, and Kansas, driven by drought, dust, and despair. “California or Bust” was scrawled across tailgates and canvas covers, a declaration of hope and defiance in the face of ruin.
They were not tourists. They were refugees of the Dust Bowl — ordinary people whose farms had turned to powder under relentless wind. The Great Depression had already stripped away savings and security; now the land itself betrayed them. So they drove west, chasing rumors of fruit harvests and steady pay.
Arrival and Reality
When they reached California, many found not the golden dream but hard ground. Labor camps were crowded. Wages were low. Locals called them “Okies,” often with contempt. Yet they worked — picking cotton, grapes, peaches — and slowly built communities along the Central Valley. Children went to school. Churches and diners appeared. The migrants who had been dismissed as transient became the backbone of California’s agricultural economy.
What Became of Them
By the 1950s, many Dust Bowl families had settled permanently. Their children became teachers, mechanics, nurses, and small business owners. The “Okie” label faded into history, replaced by pride in endurance. They brought with them a culture of resilience — plainspoken, hardworking, deeply communal — that shaped California’s rural heart.
Some never made it. Some turned back. But those who stayed transformed both themselves and the state. They proved that migration is not just movement; it is metamorphosis.
Legacy
Today, the descendants of those travelers live in towns like Bakersfield, Fresno, Los Banos, and Modesto. Their stories echo in Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath, in Woody Guthrie’s songs, and in the quiet dignity of farm families who still rise before dawn. They remind us that “California or Bust” was never just about geography. It was about survival — and the stubborn belief that life could begin again.

Book Description:
They sold the farm, packed up seven children, and chased a promise called California.
Based on Hazel’s journal, this true story follows a family that leaves Wisconsin hoping for relief from brutal winters—only to run out of money with hundreds of miles still to go. Stranded and desperate, they enter a world of labor camps, endless fieldwork, hunger, and exhaustion, where families are worked hard, paid little, and treated as disposable.
Once respected and secure, they find themselves suddenly labeled vagrants. Pride becomes a liability. Dignity must be defended daily. And survival depends on grit, faith, and refusing to give up—especially for Hazel, who will not allow poverty to erase who she is or break her family apart.
This is a raw, gripping true story of endurance, injustice, and a woman who stood her ground when everything was taken away.
Endorsement:
Hazel and Olaf is a magnificent story of resilience, perseverance, and the ability to overcome so many challenges and still believe in the good of people and in the good within. (Irit Schaffter, Author of Good Blood: A Journey of Healing)
