🫀 The Circulatory System of Contemporary Christianity: Love as Lifeblood

What if Christianity Were an Organism?

If Christianity were an organism, love would be its blood.

It would pulse through arteries of compassion and veins of mercy, carrying oxygen to every cell — believer and stranger alike. But the circulation has slowed. Some vessels are constricted by fear, others hardened by resentment. The heart still beats, but the flow is uneven.

The Heart’s Labor

At the center, the heart of Christ still contracts faithfully — sending grace outward, drawing pain inward. It never stops pumping, even when the body forgets how to receive. Every Eucharist, every act of forgiveness, every quiet kindness is a heartbeat keeping the organism alive.

Yet the heart labors against resistance. When love meets cynicism, the pulse falters. When compassion meets tribal loyalty, the blood thickens. When mercy meets outrage, the arteries narrow.

The Blockages

Some communities have developed spiritual plaque — layers of pride, nostalgia, and fear of contamination. They restrict the flow of love to those deemed “safe,” “orthodox,” or “deserving.” The result is ischemia of the soul: parts of the body starved of warmth, growing cold and numb.

Others bleed freely but without direction — love scattered, uncontained, losing pressure before it reaches the heart again. The organism needs both flow and form, both passion and discipline.

The Transfusion

The cure is not new blood but renewed circulation. Love must move again — from center to edge, from altar to street, from doctrine to encounter. It must carry oxygen to the forgotten tissues: the poor, the wounded, the doubting, the weary. It must return to the heart richer for the journey.

The organism will not die of heart failure. It will heal through movement — through love that keeps flowing even when the body limps, even when the arteries ache.

The blood is still red. The heart is still beating. The body is still alive.

post inspired by Jerry Aveta's forthcoming book, Fractured Christianity. On pre-order through Oct 12.

Book description:

Racism and the politicization of Christianity have shaped America since the colonial era, leaving divisions that continue to fracture the nation, its churches, and its communities. In Fractured Christianity: A Republic in Peril, the author draws on a lifetime of service as a federal civil servant, teacher, counselor, and pastor to examine the historical roots of these divisions and their ongoing impact on American life.

More important, he offers a path toward healing grounded in a timeless biblical principle: repentance—the willingness to change one's mind, listen, and seek reconciliation. Rather than arguing over who is right or wrong, readers are challenged to engage in meaningful conversations that bridge differences and restore relationships.
A thought-provoking resource for individuals, study groups, and faith communities seeking understanding, unity, and hope.

Jerry is also the author of the award-winning book, When Liberty Enslaves: The Toxic Blend of Faith and Politics.
