🦠 The Immune System of Christianity Today: Overreactive to Difference

What if Christianity Were an Organism?

Every organism needs an immune system — a way to recognize what belongs and what threatens. But the immune system of American Christianity has become hypersensitive. It attacks perceived threats — secularism, pluralism, internal dissent — with feverish energy, mistaking difference for disease.

The Fever of Fear

When the body feels unsafe, it inflames itself. That inflammation looks like culture wars, purity tests, and doctrinal gatekeeping. It feels righteous, even protective — but it burns the tissue it’s meant to defend. The fever becomes the illness.

The irony is that the immune system’s vigilance once kept the organism alive. It fought real infections: corruption, cruelty, spiritual apathy. But now, the antibodies are misfiring. They target anything unfamiliar — new language, new questions, new faces — as if novelty itself were contagion.

Mistaking Adaptation for Infection

A new generation’s inclusive theology, queer affirmations, ecological spirituality, and interfaith curiosity are treated as pathogens rather than antibodies. Yet these may be the very adaptations that help the organism survive in a changing world. They are not foreign bodies; they are evolved cells learning to breathe in new air.

When the immune system cannot tell infection from adaptation, it turns on itself. It attacks its own tissue — believers, communities, movements — that are trying to heal the body’s fractures. The result is autoimmune flare‑ups: schisms, cancellations, and exhaustion that weaken the whole body.

Healing the Immune Response

The cure is not to suppress discernment but to retrain it. Healthy immunity knows the difference between threat and transformation. It recognizes that the Spirit sometimes arrives disguised as change. It learns to pause before attacking, to listen before labeling, to test for truth rather than purity.

The organism’s survival depends on this: learning to welcome antibodies that look unfamiliar, learning to trust that adaptation is not betrayal, learning that difference can be medicine.

post inspired by Jerry Aveta's forthcoming book, Fractured Christianity. On pre-order through Oct 12.

Book description:

Racism and the politicization of Christianity have shaped America since the colonial era, leaving divisions that continue to fracture the nation, its churches, and its communities. In Fractured Christianity: A Republic in Peril, the author draws on a lifetime of service as a federal civil servant, teacher, counselor, and pastor to examine the historical roots of these divisions and their ongoing impact on American life.

More important, he offers a path toward healing grounded in a timeless biblical principle: repentance—the willingness to change one's mind, listen, and seek reconciliation. Rather than arguing over who is right or wrong, readers are challenged to engage in meaningful conversations that bridge differences and restore relationships.
A thought-provoking resource for individuals, study groups, and faith communities seeking understanding, unity, and hope.

Jerry is also the author of the award-winning book, When Liberty Enslaves: The Toxic Blend of Faith and Politics.
