🦴 The Skeleton of Christianity Today: Tradition Still Holding
What if Christianity Were an Organism?
Every living body needs bones — something to hold its shape when muscles tire and nerves misfire. Despite fractures and chronic pain, Christianity’s skeleton still stands.
The Structure Beneath the Flesh
Scripture, sacraments, and moral imagination form the vertebrae of the faith. They keep the organism upright when culture shifts and emotions surge. They are the framework that memory clings to — the bones that remember how to kneel, how to bless, how to rise again.
Catholicism’s bones are ancient and calcified, dense with centuries of ritual calcium. They creak but do not crumble. Protestantism’s bones are more flexible, sometimes brittle, sometimes regenerative — capable of reform but prone to fracture. Yet both skeletons still hold the body together enough to move.
The Ache of Age
The organism walks with a limp now. Old injuries — schisms, scandals, disillusionment — have left scar tissue around the joints. Some bones grind against each other, denominational arthritis born of pride and pain. But the body still moves. It still reaches, still kneels, still embraces.
The ache is not a sign of death; it’s a sign of endurance. Bones that have carried centuries will always ache.
Learning to Walk Again
Tradition is not paralysis. It is the memory of movement — the way the body remembers how to stand after falling. The skeleton does not resist change; it simply insists that change must keep the body recognizable.
The organism is learning to walk with a limp, to move carefully but still move. It is learning that broken bones can heal stronger, that fractures can become seams of grace.
The body hasn’t collapsed. It’s still upright — still breathing, still believing, still learning how to bear its own weight.

post inspired by Jerry Aveta's forthcoming book, Fractured Christianity. On pre-order through Oct 12.
Book description:
Racism and the politicization of Christianity have shaped America since the colonial era, leaving divisions that continue to fracture the nation, its churches, and its communities. In Fractured Christianity: A Republic in Peril, the author draws on a lifetime of service as a federal civil servant, teacher, counselor, and pastor to examine the historical roots of these divisions and their ongoing impact on American life.
More important, he offers a path toward healing grounded in a timeless biblical principle: repentance—the willingness to change one's mind, listen, and seek reconciliation. Rather than arguing over who is right or wrong, readers are challenged to engage in meaningful conversations that bridge differences and restore relationships.
A thought-provoking resource for individuals, study groups, and faith communities seeking understanding, unity, and hope.
Jerry is also the author of the award-winning book, When Liberty Enslaves: The Toxic Blend of Faith and Politics.
