What is Sharia in Sufism?

 


In Sufism (the mystical tradition within Islam), Sharia refers to the divine guidance and religious law that governs a Muslim's outward life, including worship, ethics, and daily conduct. A common Sufi framework describes three related dimensions:

  1. Sharia ("the path" or sacred law): the outward practices and rules of Islam.
  2. Tariqa ("the way"): the spiritual path and disciplines taught by a Sufi master.
  3. Haqiqa ("the truth" or reality): direct realization of divine truth and closeness to God.

In this view, Sharia is like the foundation of a house. Tariqa is the journey through the house, and Haqiqa is reaching its innermost treasure. Many classical Sufis taught that genuine spiritual realization cannot be separated from adherence to Sharia. [cambridge.org], [mdpi.com]

That said, different Sufi groups and thinkers have understood the relationship between Sufism and Sharia in different ways throughout history, and debates about that relationship have existed within the Muslim world for centuries. [mdpi.com], [wisdomlib.org]

In short: for most traditional Sufis, Sharia is the outward expression of God's guidance, while Sufism focuses on the inward purification of the heart. Both are meant to work together.

  1948-2021 It is with great sadness that MSI Press notes the death of Carl Leaver, CEO of the Press and typesetter and graphic designer par excellence . Many authors have expressed not only condolences but also a sense of legacy from covers he designed that they love.  Here is his obituary: On August 16, 2021, Carl Don Leaver of San Juan Bautista passed into eternal rest. A forester with the US Forest Service in Idaho and Montana, he turned to nature photography while working in the Bitterroot National Forest. His photographs graced national magazine covers and on a weekly basis the local paper of Hamilton, MT, the Ravalli Republican.
