When Halloween Falls on Caturday

 


Some holidays seem destined to meet.

This year, Halloween falls on Caturday, the internet's unofficial weekly celebration of all things feline. If there were ever a day for cats to claim complete domination of social media, this is it.

Then again, perhaps they already have.

Halloween has long belonged to black cats, mysterious shadows, glowing eyes, and creatures that slip silently through the darkness. Cats themselves seem perfectly aware of their role in the season. They appear unexpectedly. They stare at things no one else can see. They knock objects off tables without explanation. They patrol the house at 3 a.m. as though responding to emergencies invisible to human eyes.

If dogs are the cheerful participants in Halloween festivities, cats are the event planners.

Of course, real cats deserve better than the old superstitions that once unfairly linked them to bad luck. Today, cat lovers know what black cats and their colorful cousins truly bring into our lives: companionship, comfort, entertainment, and the occasional reminder that we are not actually in charge of the household.

So perhaps the best way to celebrate this year's Halloween Caturday is simple:

Share a photo of your cat.

Offer an extra treat.

Admire the elegance with which cats can turn an ordinary cardboard box into a throne.

And remember that while witches may fly on broomsticks, most cats would prefer to supervise the operation from a nearby chair.

In Memoriam: Carl Don Leaver

  1948-2021 It is with great sadness that MSI Press notes the death of Carl Leaver, CEO of the Press and typesetter and graphic designer par excellence . Many authors have expressed not only condolences but also a sense of legacy from covers he designed that they love.  Here is his obituary: On August 16, 2021, Carl Don Leaver of San Juan Bautista passed into eternal rest. A forester with the US Forest Service in Idaho and Montana, he turned to nature photography while working in the Bitterroot National Forest. His photographs graced national magazine covers and on a weekly basis the local paper of Hamilton, MT, the Ravalli Republican. He later worked on photography projects for the US Army (AFEES) and taught photography at the New York Institute of Technology in Amman, Jordan.
