From Morning Prayer: “Now let the new Jerusalem draw forth new sweetness from this hymn."

“The New Jerusalem” refers to the heavenly city described in Revelation 21–22 — the final, restored creation where God dwells fully with humanity. It’s not a physical city on earth but a symbol of the world made new, the Church perfected, and the fulfillment of God’s promises.

🌿 What “the New Jerusalem” means in Christian prayer

When it appears in Morning Prayer (especially during Eastertide), it’s pointing to:

  • The final dwelling of God with humanity — “Behold, the dwelling of God is with the human race.”

  • A renewed creation — no death, no mourning, no pain.

  • The Church in her perfected, glorified state — the Bride prepared for Christ.

  • The fulfillment of the covenant — everything God promised Israel brought to completion.

It’s the destination toward which the whole liturgical year leans, especially in Easter: not just resurrection back to life, but resurrection into a transformed creation.

🕊️ Imagery in the antiphons or psalms

The New Jerusalem is described with:

  • A radiant city with gates of pearl and streets of gold

  • A river of life flowing from the throne of God

  • The tree of life bearing fruit for the healing of the nations

  • No temple — because God is the temple

  • No sun or moon — because the Lamb is its light

This is why the breviary often pairs it with psalms of joy, rebuilding, or pilgrimage.

✨ Why it shows up in Morning Prayer

Morning Prayer is oriented toward light, renewal, and hope. The New Jerusalem is the ultimate “morning” — the dawn that never ends.

During Eastertide especially, the Church prays as people who already live in the light of the Resurrection, moving toward the fullness of that light.

      1948-2021 It is with great sadness that MSI Press notes the death of Carl Leaver, CEO of the Press and typesetter and graphic designer par excellence . Many authors have expressed not only condolences but also a sense of legacy from covers he designed that they love.  Here is his obituary: On August 16, 2021, Carl Don Leaver of San Juan Bautista passed into eternal rest. A forester with the US Forest Service in Idaho and Montana, he turned to nature photography while working in the Bitterroot National Forest. His photographs graced national magazine covers and on a weekly basis the local paper of Hamilton, MT, the Ravalli Republican. He later worked on photography projects for the US Army (AFEES) and taught photography at the New York Institute of Technology in Amman, Jordan.
