Morning Prayer: chaste of mind and soul

 


To pray for a chaste mind and soul is to ask God to purify the interior landscape where our real life is lived. Long before our bodies act, our thoughts wander. Long before our hands reach, our desires lean. The mind is where we rehearse our loves, our fears, our fantasies, our resentments. The soul is where we store our motives, our loyalties, our hidden hungers. To be chaste in these places is to ask for a kind of inner clarity—an honesty before God that refuses to let anything take root that distorts how we see ourselves or how we see others.

Chastity of mind means guarding the imagination. It means refusing to let our thoughts turn people into objects, trophies, threats, or tools. It means noticing when our inner commentary becomes possessive, envious, or self‑indulgent, and gently redirecting it toward truth.

Chastity of soul means tending the deeper movements of the heart: the intentions behind our choices, the quiet impulses that shape our relationships, the subtle ways we seek comfort or control. It is the discipline of letting God sift our desires so that love can be clean, not cluttered.

Chastity of body is different. It is the outward expression of this inward work. It governs our actions—what we do with our bodies, how we touch, how we speak, how we cross or honor boundaries. Bodily chastity is important, but it is not the whole picture. One can be outwardly restrained yet inwardly chaotic. One can follow the rules of conduct while the imagination runs wild. The prayer for chastity of mind and soul asks for the deeper transformation, the one that makes bodily chastity natural rather than forced.

The difference is this: chastity of body is about behavior; chastity of mind and soul is about vision. It is about how we see the world, how we see other people, how we see ourselves. It is about letting God cleanse the lens through which we interpret everything. When that lens is clear, our actions follow. When that lens is clouded, our actions eventually reveal it.

So, we pray: Lord, make us chaste of mind and soul. Purify our thoughts, our motives, our desires. Let us see others as whole persons, never as objects of appetite or instruments of our needs. Let our inner life be spacious enough for love, disciplined enough for truth, and quiet enough for Your voice. And from that interior chastity, let our bodies learn to act with gentleness, integrity, and reverence.
