Cancer Diary: The Stillness That Hurts
Cancer changes your relationship to movement. Not the heroic kind — not marathons, not gym memberships, not the glossy “fitness journey” that belongs to people whose bodies still obey them. I mean the small movements: standing up, shifting weight, walking to the mailbox, stretching your spine after sitting too long. The movements that feel optional until the day they aren’t.
What researchers are discovering — and what anyone who has lived inside cancer already knows — is that inactivity becomes its own kind of danger. Not because people with cancer are lazy or unmotivated, but because cancer rearranges the body’s priorities. Fatigue becomes a gravitational force. Pain becomes a negotiation. Treatment becomes a full‑time job. And stillness becomes a trap.
The science is blunt: People who already have cancer and spend long stretches of time sitting — especially more than thirty minutes at a time — die sooner. It’s not dramatic. It’s not cinematic. It’s cellular. Inactivity feeds inflammation, slows metabolism, stiffens circulation, and encourages the quiet metabolic chaos that cancer loves.
But here is the part that matters for the Diary: The antidote is small. Not heroic. Not athletic. Not performative.
A few minutes of walking. A gentle stretch. A slow lap around the house. Standing up when the body says “stay.” Interrupting stillness before it calcifies.
People imagine cancer as a battle fought in hospitals, infusion rooms, and operating theaters. But much of the battle happens in the quiet domestic spaces where a person decides — or doesn’t decide — to move. The research shows that even light movement breaks reduce mortality. Five minutes of vigorous movement lowers it even more. But the point is not the numbers. The point is that agency survives, even when the body is compromised.
Movement becomes a form of defiance. A way of saying: I am still here. A way of participating in your own survival.
Cancer takes many things, but it does not take the ability to stand up. Not yet. And while the science is still evolving, the message is clear enough for anyone writing a diary about living with cancer or loving someone who is: stillness is not rest. Stillness is risk.
Move because you can. Move because it matters. Move because it is one of the few choices cancer cannot take from you.

Blog editor's note: As a memorial to Carl, and simply because it is truly needed, MSI Press is now hosting a web page, Carl's Cancer Compendium, as a one-stop starting point for all things cancer, to make it easier for those with cancer to find answers to questions that can otherwise take hours to track down on the Internet and/or from professionals. The CCC is expanded and updated weekly. As part of this effort, each week, on Monday, this blog will carry an informative, cancer-related story -- and be open to guest posts: Cancer Diary.
