Cancer Diary: When the Skin Speaks

 


The skin is our most visible organ — our boundary with the world, our shield, our mirror. It tells stories of age, weather, emotion, and health. But sometimes, it tells stories we don’t want to hear.

Changes in the skin can be among the earliest — or most overlooked — signs of cancer. They whisper before they shout.

1. The skin as a storyteller

Every cell of the skin is part of a living conversation with the body. When that conversation changes — through hormones, immune signals, or cellular mutation — the skin responds.

Cancer can alter that dialogue in subtle ways:

  • A new mole that changes shape or color

  • A patch that thickens or bleeds

  • A rash that doesn’t heal

  • A yellowing or darkening of tone

  • A texture that feels different under the fingers

These are not cosmetic changes. They are messages.

2. Skin cancers themselves

The most direct relationship between skin and cancer is, of course, skin cancer itself.

Basal cell carcinoma

  • Often appears as a pearly bump or sore that won’t heal.

  • Slow-growing, rarely spreads, but destructive locally.

Squamous cell carcinoma

  • Rough, scaly patch or wart-like growth.

  • May bleed or crust.

  • Can spread if ignored.

Melanoma

  • The most dangerous.

  • Often starts as a mole that changes — asymmetry, irregular borders, multiple colors, or growth.

  • Can appear anywhere, even where the sun rarely shines.

The rule dermatologists teach is simple:

If it changes, it deserves attention.

3. Internal cancers reflected on the skin

Sometimes, the skin changes because of cancer elsewhere in the body.

Examples include:

  • Jaundice (yellow skin) — liver or pancreatic cancer

  • Darkening or thickening (acanthosis nigricans) — stomach or pancreatic cancer

  • Itching — lymphoma, leukemia, or bile duct obstruction

  • Rashes or nodules — paraneoplastic syndromes (immune reactions to hidden tumors)

  • Bruising or bleeding easily — blood cancers affecting platelets

The skin becomes a messenger for internal imbalance.

4. The emotional layer

Skin changes are visible — and that visibility can be frightening. People notice, comment, or avoid. But the skin is not betraying you; it’s protecting you. It’s trying to draw attention to what’s happening inside.

Cancer hides best when we dismiss what we see.

5. The takeaway

If the skin changes and doesn’t return to normal — look deeper.

The body speaks through color, texture, and sensation. The skin is its most honest voice.

A Publisher's Conversation with Authors: De-confusing Royalty Structure

  Authors frequently confuse LIST and NET and, in this way, end up with contracts that pay lower royalties when they believe that they are getting a good deal. Often, they cannot negotiate in ways that benefit themselves because they do not understand this difference and its significance. Let's break this down. List refers to the retail price of the book. Payment on list means a percentage of the retail price of the book. If royalties are 8% of list (5-8% is typical), then on a $10 book, royalties would be 80 cents; if they are 10%, royalties are $1, on every book sold. Easy to calculate, easy to predict income, and always standardized, no surprises or overestimations. Net refers to what is leftover after expenses.
