Saint Augustine of Hippo (354–430) was one of the most influential Christian thinkers in Western history — a philosopher, theologian, bishop, and writer whose works shaped Christian doctrine for centuries.

He grew up brilliant but spiritually unsettled. He pursued rhetoric, worldly success, and pleasure. He joined Manichaeism, a dualistic religion promising intellectual sophistication.

Disillusioned, he turned to Neoplatonism, which helped him imagine God as something more profound than the material world.

3. Conversion in Milan

Under the preaching of St. Ambrose, Augustine experienced a deep interior shift. In 386, he was baptized. His famous line in Confessions captures this turning:

“Our hearts are restless until they rest in You.”

4. Return to Africa and unexpected leadership

He returned home intending a contemplative life, but the community pressed him into service. He became bishop of Hippo in 396 and served until his death.

  Authors frequently confuse LIST and NET and, in this way, end up with contracts that pay lower royalties when they believe that they are getting a good deal. Payment on list means a percentage of the retail price of the book.
