Children of survivors often inherit more than stories. They inherit the emotional atmosphere of survival: vigilance, silence, grief, and sometimes guilt. These are not taught directly; they are absorbed. A parent’s fear of loss becomes a child’s fear of change. A parent’s guardedness becomes a child’s caution. Psychologists call this intergenerational trauma, but survivors often describe it more simply: “It’s in the air.” The unspoken memories of persecution, displacement, and loss can form the emotional architecture of a family. Even when parents try to protect their children from the pain, the children sense it — and carry it forward.

Yet transmission is not destiny. Many descendants of trauma have turned that inheritance into empathy, activism, and art. They have learned to name what their parents could not, to speak what was once unspeakable. In doing so, they begin to transform inherited pain into collective understanding.

Intergenerational trauma reminds us that history is not only recorded in books; it is written in people. Healing begins when those stories are finally told — not to reopen wounds, but to let them breathe.
