Cancer Diary: When the Small Things Speak — Nail Fungus and the Body’s Terrain

 



Nail fungus seems trivial. A cosmetic nuisance. Something to hide under polish or ignore until it thickens and crumbles. But sometimes the smallest irritations speak the loudest about the body’s terrain.

Fungal infections live in the margins—places where circulation is slow, immunity is distracted, or inflammation has become chronic. They are opportunists, not architects. They don’t cause cancer. But they thrive in the same conditions that cancer does: low oxygen, poor repair, chronic irritation, and immune fatigue.

When the immune system is strong and alert, nail fungus rarely gains ground. When the body is under strain—metabolic, emotional, or inflammatory—it can linger for years. In that sense, nail fungus is not a cause but a signal: the body’s quiet way of saying, I’m tired of fighting on too many fronts.

Some nail cancers—melanoma or squamous cell carcinoma—can masquerade as fungus. A streak under the nail, a distorted shape, bleeding, pain, or a lesion that won’t heal should never be dismissed. When a “fungus” doesn’t respond to treatment, it deserves a closer look.

But most of the time, nail fungus is simply chronic irritation made visible. It reminds us that the body’s surface tells stories about its interior. That small, persistent infections are part of the same conversation as chronic inflammation. That the terrain matters.

Cancer doesn’t begin with catastrophe. It begins with imbalance. And sometimes, the first whisper of that imbalance is a thickened nail.

A Publisher's Conversation with Authors: De-confusing Royalty Structure

  Authors frequently confuse LIST and NET and, in this way, end up with contracts that pay lower royalties when they believe that they are getting a good deal. Often, they cannot negotiate in ways that benefit themselves because they do not understand this difference and its significance. Let's break this down. List refers to the retail price of the book. Payment on list means a percentage of the retail price of the book. If royalties are 8% of list (5-8% is typical), then on a $10 book, royalties would be 80 cents; if they are 10%, royalties are $1, on every book sold. Easy to calculate, easy to predict income, and always standardized, no surprises or overestimations. Net refers to what is leftover after expenses.
