Cats & Their People: Stories from Conflict Zones — Eight Cats & Mohamed

(Leo died of starvation a year ago, now there eight cats, all living but in need of help.)


Mohamed is an engineer is a pharmacy student in Gaza. He takes care of eight cats in his tent, and he tries to help his sister's family, whose tent is totally destroyed.

Here is Mohamed's story:

Mohammed is trapped in Gaza along with his family. This includes his parents, siblings, and grandmother. Despite the ceasefire, conditions in Gaza remain extremely severe. Mohammed's family urgently needs support to cover essentials like food, water, shelter, and medical care—for themselves and cats, Mimi, Momo, and Meo. Displaced in the Al-Mawasi tent encampment, they've split up as a precaution (to have surviving family members if one area is bombed).

 
Recent winter storms brought heavy rain and wind that collapsed their tent, soaking bedding and belongings. (Flooding in Gaza exacerbates health and safety risks.) Daily life is a constant struggle amid physical threats and profound psychological trauma. Mohammed's younger brother, Amir, already shows graying hair from unrelenting fear and stress. A clear indicator of the toll on Palestinians there. Regardless of these barriers, Mohammed persists with his Agricultural Engineering studies, showing remarkable resilience. He is a cherished person to anybody lucky enough to have him in their lives.

A Publisher's Conversation with Authors: De-confusing Royalty Structure

  Authors frequently confuse LIST and NET and, in this way, end up with contracts that pay lower royalties when they believe that they are getting a good deal. Often, they cannot negotiate in ways that benefit themselves because they do not understand this difference and its significance. Let's break this down. List refers to the retail price of the book. Payment on list means a percentage of the retail price of the book. If royalties are 8% of list (5-8% is typical), then on a $10 book, royalties would be 80 cents; if they are 10%, royalties are $1, on every book sold.
