Morning Prayer: The Quiet Weight of a Sparrow

A sparrow is mentioned more than once in the Bible, including in this morning's prayer, and that repetition is not accidental. In Scripture, the sparrow carries a quiet but insistent significance: God’s unwavering attentiveness to what seems small, ordinary, or easily overlooked.

In the ancient marketplace, sparrows were the cheapest of all birds — two for a farthing, five for two farthings, a kind of “buy four, get one free” of the first century. They were common, unadorned, and of little economic value. Yet Jesus says that not one of them falls to the ground without the Father knowing. The point is not the bird; the point is the care. If God attends to the smallest creature, He attends to us even more.

The Psalms deepen this image. In Psalm 84, the sparrow finds a home near God’s altars — a poetic reminder that even the smallest life can dwell close to the Holy. In Psalm 102, the solitary sparrow on a rooftop becomes a symbol of human loneliness and vulnerability. The bird is tiny, but the emotional truth it carries is large.

Across these passages, the sparrow becomes a thread stitching together a larger truth:

  • Providence: God sees and remembers even the smallest life.

  • Human worth: If the sparrow is cared for, we are not forgotten.

  • Humility: God’s attention is not reserved for the grand or impressive.

  • Inclusion: Even the smallest creature finds a place near the altar.

The Bible does not elevate the sparrow because it is magnificent. It elevates the sparrow because it is small. And in doing so, Scripture quietly insists that nothing — and no one — is beneath God’s care.

Morning Prayer posts inspired by Being Catholic in Troubled Times (Dennis Ortman)

Book Description:

These are times that try our souls. This book is addressed to all, not just Catholics, who search for deeper meaning in tough times. Our age is marked by division and alienation. We long for some message that will bring peace to our world and our hearts.

This book suggests that the Catholic faith can provide strength in these troubled times. The word "catholic" means "all-embracing, universal." Nothing is excluded in the catholic mind. The truth that sets us free can be found everywhere, especially in unexpected places. It is often hidden in plain sight. In our darkest moments, we find new light and life. When we are most despairing, a ray of hope shines through.

Dr. Dennis Ortman, former priest and current psychologist, is the author of Anger Anonymous, Anxiety Anonymous, Depression Anonymous, Being Catholic in Troubled Times, and Life, Liberty, and COVID-19.
